The Next-to-Nothing of Social Media Discourse

I've long felt sad, chuckled at and sometimes aggravated by "keyboard warriors" who post nothing but mocking emojis, memes, clips from news sources but rarely and often -never- have anything of intelligence to say when they see a posting in social media they disagree with or simply don't like. They often respond with nothing but what I've just mentioned here. Such is their supposed "contribution" to the public "good". I suppose it irks their own sense of comfort and confirmation bias so perhaps their lack of personal thinking seems the way to go- so they let others shoot X, Y or Z down for them.

I can hear someone thinking "What Glenn, like YOU do?" Go to my years of social media sites and check how often I do such things or respond in that way to posts please. Also check out the threads of discussion and how I engage with folks with whom I disagree. Perfect, no! Practice what I preach? I truly try to.

Thoughtful, online, public or at least direct messages that engage seem beyond some folks! It's no wonder the world of mockers, scoffers (see Psalm One) has long existed.

Shallow minds, chips on shoulders, reluctance and even determination to -not- engage the actual points raised in posts abound. Bullying, fear, rage abound in the current climate. Oh, history provides a load of the same if you actually take the time to read and study and not merely search for more agreement with your own prejudices.

What worries me and yes, bothers me most? For some there is nothing but scorn and ridicule to offer- this is their "contribution" to the issues rather than actually working at civil discourse with those they disagree. When Paul advises "Respect ALL people" in his letter to the church, I wonder if those who profess to love Jesus do so by such thin sniping. It's like they just cannot bring themselves beyond a sort of cheap shot game when truth holds up a mirror to their own fabricated notions of what's real and what isn't.

Oh I'm quite aware I'm not always correct, often push into extremes and yes, ignorant myself in many areas of life- knowledge, wisdom, history, and often I'm just plain wrong. I'm sure this is true of me even in light of God's Word. I would hope some of the many trolls hiding in the bushes would mature and be honest enough to admit the same, at least within their own minds. I choose to do so here and now in public.

Thank God we can all change by His grace! Thank God for His truth- and Jesus, THE way, truth, life! God could have simply brought another flood to end the self-focused, often inhuman race but He didn't. He sent His perfect Son in response to our imperfect, hard hearts, thick heads and ungracious attitudes so we might come to authentically know Jesus, the only Lord and Savior there ever was or shall ever be!

God help us -including me- become more like Him, reflect Him more and self less -even when we disagree or chafe at what we read, see, hear.

As always, thanks for stopping by. -Glenn
