The Christian Myth?

It's interesting- I've studied world history nearly my entire life and the term "myth" stopped being a myth to me around the 4th or 5th grade elementary school as I began studying them. Which "them"? LONG list, and of course longer as the years passed.

My family had just about nothing to do with church and were not attenders right through my early, then teen years.

The phrase "Christian myth" or "creation story" surfaced in my reading but I didn't pay any attention nor did I think about the Bible or even churches or Christianity but for a few days of a summer church "vacation Bible school" when I was 6 years old, then for maybe two or three weeks at a rather spiritually dry church when I was 9... and not even a hair's-worth again until I was two weeks to my 18th birthday on the night I became a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. So much for mythology.

Why do I say this?

As a drug, booze, sex and music addict (and that's THE exact, correct term) I couldn't stop when I wanted to. No peace. More was never enough. Every day, every way, however and wherever I could find these -and they were everywhere among friends and people I'd meet. But it was literally Jesus's Name I called on due to a deep and honestly shocking series of events which brought me to sense God's nearness and His communication to me.

I was fully straight/sober that night. I'd been white knuckling it to try and quit my addictions but was right on the edge to failing yet again -and knew it. God's presence was palpable and I said "I know You're here and trying to talk to me but I don't get it! What are you trying to say?!"

"For God so loved the world (GLENN??!!!!) that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever would believe in Him would not perish but have everlasting life".

John 3.16 flashed from my 6 year old memory and it was as if being struck by lightening.

The rest has been literally, history- my life-long pursuit and walk with my Lord and Savior, with my Father, the Holy Spirit working on, in, through me, serving via music, speaking, writing, one-on-one convos all over the world, He never stops and so here I am laughing at what some might refer to me "Glenn's very own creation myth". Over the next 9 months the addictions all left, and I can say that more than a few of my friends thought I'd fully trashed my mind on acid, etc., which earlier on they'd have been correct!

My own origin story is more than a myth. The risen Christ made Himself -and continues to this day- real, alive and powerful, doing in me and sometimes through me what I never could have or can now but for His immediate presence and grace.

Myths are made-up. They are an imagined way humans seek to understand themselves, nature, the world, universe, the way things are or seem to be.

Jesus Christ? The Maker of creation, universe and reality itself is not a mere myth- though there are plenty of reasons self-serving sinners (and true enough we Christians fall into this at times) would love to toss His realness and His eventual return and coming judgment as mere mythology.

God offers mercy, forgiveness, deliverance from humanly constructed narrative myths -and eternal life. This life is in His Son Who stated about Himself "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father by by Me."

As always, thanks for stopping by. -Glenn
