Technique and Feel- Guitar/Music Thoughts

I've had a recent back-and-forth with a friend who like me, doesn't mind -some- sloppiness if the overall feel of an artists's songs strike him as passionate and powerful. Here's my response to his comments re. using Gibson SG's and this general area of tone and appreciation. He began the convo in response to my video clip about perfectionism.

I wrote: "Tone, I think, is in the person, the mind, the setting up of a guitar, amp, pedal/s and the mic'ing techniques- but in the end there seems to be two things: actual good-better-best technicalities/technique... and then personal subjective desire for an outcome.

Therefore a brilliant guitarist or craftsman may rightly first think about and value the technical precision but then judgement is made on the aesthetic quality/qualities, personal desire for the finished product. I live more in the second of these than the first but there are elements of the first where some things I do drive me crazy sometimes so I get both approaches/views.

A third matter is what you wanted at the end that others wouldn't notice whether or not you missed your target because they're not inside your head and heart so they don't know that to you X, Y or Z was/is a mistake, you didn't succeed creating what you wanted to. In music, they only hear what was put out in public in the live or studio performance and if THEY dig it, they just do- whether they in themselves lean toward technique or feel (if they're guitarists for example).

Then again I hear brilliant technique and don't remember the song the second it ends (or I don't even finish listening to it in a recorded piece) so it may indeed be brilliant but leave me flat, zero fetching to me, not memorable. Another person may have their mouth hanging open. So it's like some folks dig the flavor of ghost peppers while others only "taste" heat and it's not to their liking- which is an aesthetic, not merely a technical point of capsicum values of the pepper.

I may just publicize this bit I've written to help people think through the issues some, perhaps some will benefit- while others (ha!) perhaps could care less!

I loved my SG w. humbuckers during REZ Band but it didn't have the fullness of Les Pauls, with Stu playing Strats and Jacksons covering most of the lead licks and high end of the spectrum it indeed made more sense for me to use LPs. The joy of GKB and especially my solo gigs and recordings I get to use other gits though from time to time I still use LPs, mostly in GKB and on -some- recording for the specifics of tone I'm looking for re. the particular song or part of the song."
