Problems and Realities of Fashion

And before some of y'all good ol' boys jump on this one way or the other, you and all cultures and subcultures have their day -and often fade to oblivion. But wait -elements of whatever it was will come around again. This is real and verifiable history whether you believe it, know it or not.

Then again many of us find where we're most comfortable and park right there.

Fashions, styles, change. It's a moving target. If you are really focused on being fashionable most of the time, that's a problem because you figure you just have to "keep current" with the changes to be continually cool and young or at least youngish. It can be daunting, right?

Fashion is also pretty cyclical. Who would have thought this or that music style, clothing trend or as I write city-dwellers seeking country life would ever "come around" again in big form? But an ancient Book tells us "There is NOTHING new under the sun", also proclaiming "all is vanity". Fashion reboots happen -and hybrids thereof.

I get regular encouraging reports from a long-time street ministry that in the main hands out hip tract/booklets to Eastern/spiritual-thinking passersby at concerts, McDonald's and massive music festivals. They also often go door-to-door in small, more rural towns. Know what they pass out by the thousands? Older Resurrection Band/REZ/Glenn Kaiser Band and other now-defunct Grrr Records artists as well as a good number of other Christian artist's music in compilation-form. They asked for and received the o.k. from these artists to put together various projects of their own creation to give away for free as a witness to the Lord Jesus and His Gospel.

Someone reading this is thinking "Oh, that's soooo old hat! Nobody does stuff like that anymore and if they did few would take that stuff or ever listen, read or care!" For years those in the teams send in reports that say quite the opposite.

Their free cd music-takers span the spectrum of older rock-lovers to young kids who freshly LOVE the music they're getting -as they see some who've gotten past cds sometimes a year or more later and are ecstatic over the stuff. New discoveries of music -and indeed faith happen plenty for young and old alike. It's spiritual and also cultural.

Sure, for some, various music, the songs and even the booklets they pass out don't "seem" old. Then again among some people old school doesn't strike them as un-hip. Why? Many continue to listen to (and read such stuff -just like poetry old and literally new) but the other reason is that some of the music and the way they package the Good News has come around once again. It's popular though surely some of it "went out of style".

Love, sharing, kindness and truth take their hits (whew... consider Jesus) but often old, even ancient things come to us in very fresh ways -and by God's grace, perhaps wake us up to His reality in an ever-changing/but-not-really world.

I don't live for fashion but thank God He fashions us after Himself, in Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit as we seek and follow Him!

As always, thanks for stopping by :) -Glenn
